The Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation Water Treatment Plant and Water Tower were substantially completed in mid-2020. The implementation of this communal water system allowed for the removal of a 13-year long-term Boil Water Advisory and Drinking Water Advisory. The new system provides safe and reliable drinking water to residential and non-residential buildings the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation, including the Great Blue Heron Hotel and Casino.
SBA was originally retained to complete a water system feasibility study for Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation. Through this study, SBA worked with the First Nation to determine the best solution for developing an effective and reliable water source, treatment, and distribution system to meet the long‑term servicing needs for the growth of the Community. SBA also assisted Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation in obtaining Small Communities Funding and Indigenous Services Canada funding.
Following the study, SBA was then retained by Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation to complete the detailed design and provide contract administration for the construction of the new $18M water system which included a new water treatment plant, 12 km of new watermain and a new 1100 m3 elevated water storage tower. SBA has continued to work with Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation since the substantial completion of the water system in 2020, on source water protection, maintenance management system development, process optimization and chemical storage upgrades.
As part of the overall Water Feasibility Study, a need for new water supply wells was identified in order to meet the 20-year demand of the Community. SBA oversaw the design, construction, and testing of four new wells located in two local aquifers. Nearing the completion of the Water Treatment Plant, the new wells were twinned in 2022 to ensure redundancy for the new system and to meet at provincial and federal regulations. A Source Water Protection Plan was developed for Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation to ensure proper protection and management of the new water supply for the future.
