SBA completed the Feasibility Assessment, Design and Contract Administration for an upgrade and expansion to the existing Water Treatment Plant for Big Grassy First Nation, increasing capacity to meet the Community’s 20-year long-term population growth. The project included upgrades to the raw water intake and low lift pumping chamber, a new conventional filtration process, ultraviolet and chlorine disinfection, as well as electrical and mechanical upgrades consisting of new SCADA, heating and various process and pumping equipment improvements. The Water Treatment Plant has been designed and constructed to meet the requirements for drinking water systems located in Ontario, providing a multibarrier approach as required by the Ontario Safe Drinking Water Act and in guidance with the Ten State Standards for treatment and disinfection.

As a result of these upgrades, this Water Treatment Plant, which was previously under several Boil Water Advisories and was identified under a National Water Assessment as high-risk, has now been fully commissioned and put into operation to service the current and long-term potable water needs of the Community.
