For decades, the community of Grassy Narrows First Nation has been subjected to the unparalleled disruption to their way of life, economic situation, food security and health and wellbeing, following the discharge of tons of mercury into their territorial waters.  In response, the Government of Canada made a commitment to ensure that Grassy Narrows residents who are living with mercury poisoning receive the care they need while staying closer to home, community and family. To achieve this, S. Burnett & Associates Limited, along with a team of architects, engineers and medical experts have worked in collaboration with Grassy Narrows First Nation to design and develop the Mercury Care Home & Treatment Centre.

This one-of-a-kind facility combines cultural and traditional healing and architecture, with state‑of‑the-art medical treatment facilities, with the goal of bringing much needed healing to the people of Grassy Narrows First Nation. At over 66,000 sq. ft., the facility is home to 20 patient rooms and staff accommodations, as well as office and examination spaces for visiting medical professionals and specialists, a full kitchen and therapy pool. All 20 patient rooms overlook Grassy Narrows Lake providing residents with a connection to their traditional way of life.

The design itself encompasses the imagery and traditions of Grassy Narrows First Nation, with the building being designed in the shape of an upside-down canoe and includes natural and First Nation driven design choices throughout. The building is also designed to exceed the highest energy standards, while still providing ample natural light throughout.

The facility provides much needed space for medical treatment, ranging from physiotherapy and hydrotherapy, to eye care and dentistry.  The site also includes a walking trail, helipad and space for cultural ceremonies, bridging the gap between traditional and western medicine.

The team at SBA is proud to work alongside Grassy Narrows First Nation on this project and to provide a place for care and treatment of survivors of mercury poisoning.
